Obama's More Perfect Union

Greetings,

Senator Obama's More Perfect Union speech has sparked what many believe (and I am in this camp) a critical examination of issues of race in the United States. In case you have not had a chance to view this speech in its entirety, I have embedded the youtube video link below.

Not only are many people (at least those that I have had the good fortune to talk with) impressed that Senator Obama did not skirt the issue, or bury it under the rug is that according to the following link, Senator Obama wrote this speech himself.

I must say that it is refreshing to see something addressed head on as Jon Stewart of The Daily Show muses.

Needless to say, dealing with the sensitive and painful issues of race can sometimes only be examined through a comedic lens.

Of course, there are other comedic discourses that add to the fun.

Nevertheless, I think that win, lose, or draw Senator Obama has approached issues of race in an honest, open way that I think will be examined and discussed for years to come and for me, as a scholar and a person of color it is a discussion whose time has come.

Peace,

Jonathan

Something that I finally have time to write about

Greetings,

As some of you may know (who am I kidding, no one reads this thing)
E. Gary Gygax who to many of my friends created Dungeons & Dragons, which growing up was instrumental in growing up. Now I know that anyone who might read this might ask me, "How?" Quite simply, I grew up in a dysfunctional family (But then again, who hasn't?) gave me an out. A way to get away from the madness that I must admit has led me to the University of Washington and working on my Ph.D. in Communication. Anyway, while there has been numerous posts on the web regarding his death there are two that I have run into that I felt are really special. The first one is this one. The second one is from the Colbert Report.

Yes Gary, you will be missed.

Peace,

Jonathan

After a long time doing other things, a business is born...

Greetings,

I am hear to announce (or write, to be more precise) that I have finally set up jnh1066 Productions as an actual company. I expect it to make not much money right now, especially since my time is spent on finishing up at UW and moving on to the next phase of my life, which come to think of it, setting up jnh1066 Productions is an important development for the next phase of my life.

Peace,

Jonathan

Focus, focus, focus

Greetings,

Right now is a busy time for me. What with studying for exams, working on NASAAs (Native American Students in Advanced Academia) annual symposium, writing abstracts for conferences, and working on a video project (plus a couple of other projects in the pipe) I'm swamped. It's a good thing, but it does limit the time I have for doing postings. What I'm also concerned with is trying to develop some form of schedule that allows me to do all of this without it all colliding at once. Hmm, I guess I don't have that much to say right now at all.

Peace,

Jon

The First REAL Posting

Greetings,

I've finally decided that it was time to actually post something on this long dormant blog. The problem is that I have really nothing to post. To put it another way, I've been busy in pursuit of other things, such as studying for my general exams (Which incidentally, has not been going according to schedule, but hey, what does?), working at my job at the university that sort of pays the bills and the other things that tend to interrupt (but are happy interruptions such as out of town visitors, etc.) one's plans. But I digress, while it is true that I am a graduate student (PH.D. if you care to know) and I have all of the responsibilities and headaches that go along with such an endeavor, however, I am working on a project that is outside of the 'academy' regarding the jurisprudence of rape in Indian Country. Hopefully soon, I'll have some info, photos, and perhaps a clip or two online. Well, I'm off to the salt mines.

Peace,

Jon
